AND CULTURAL VITALITY OF HOME CITY
Montreal, Canada Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) today presented the free outdoor program for the 2006 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. The Company announced its major sponsorship of the event on May 25, during the Festival’s presentation of this year’s concert line-up.
"The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is a major and growing tourist attraction, with a significant economic impact for Montreal. Alcan’s sponsorship is a clear demonstration of the Company’s commitment to sustainability and the on-going economic and cultural vitality of our Montreal home," said Richard Evans, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Inc.
Through Alcan’s sponsorship, the Festival will be able to stage all of its planned events, in particular, free outdoor family activities - such as the Parc Musical Alcan and the Petite École du Jazz. Fun and educational activities, such as free face-painting and making musical instruments from aluminum, will be on offer for children to get involved in this year’s Festival.
In addition, Alcan is presenting the Invitation series of concerts, featuring talented French musicians Biréli Lagrène and Aldo Romano; it will also host the free outdoor closing concert with Goran Bregovic and his 40 musicians on the Festival’s main stage.
"Alcan is proud to co-present the free outdoor Festival program, which has become an important part of Montreal’s rich cultural fabric," added Cynthia Carroll, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Primary Metal Group at a press conference today at Montreal’s Spectrum theatre.
Alcan is also the official sponsor of the Festival’s recycling and waste reduction program. Last year, the Festival recycled 20.5 tonnes of material, keeping valuable aluminum out of the waste stream. This year, Alcan and the Festival will institute an ongoing litter pick-up service.
"We are very proud to welcome Alcan back as the Festival’s co-presenter, as this prestigious multi-national Montreal-based Company played such an important role in making the Festival a truly international event in the 1980’s. There is little doubt that a partnership with such an impressive entity contributes to the Festival’s future development and to Montreal’s cultural reputation throughout the world," said Alain Simard, Festival president.
