Alcan Contributes more than CAN$200,000 to Reduce School Drop-out Rates in the Saguenay – Lac St. Jean Region
2005/12/05

Saguenay – Lac St. Jean, Québec Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) announced today that by 2010 it will have contributed more than CAN$200,000 to the Conseil régional de la prévention de l’abandon scolaire (CRÉPAS), to help reduce school drop-out rates in the Saguenay – Lac St. Jean region.

"Alcan is proud to support CRÉPAS and its partners in their concrete efforts to increase young people’s dedication to and successful completion of their studies," said Jean Simon, President, Alcan Primary Metal in Québec and the United States. "Together with the important work CRÉPAS is doing, we are supporting future generations’ ability to adapt to a changing industrial environment and giving them the concrete means to support regional economic development in the long-term," he added.

At a press conference today, the Company renewed its contribution to CRÉPAS by CAN$100,000 over the next five years. This follows a previous commitment of CAN$105,000 that ran between 1998 and 2005.

Throughout the year, CRÉPAS does much work on the ground with numerous social partners, in implementing concrete actions to tackle the issue of educational abandonment at its source. Specifically, CRÉPAS implements a regional public awareness campaign every year to positively promote the benefits of education and motivate adults, in particular parents, to support young people in focusing on their studies.

"The education of young people is critical in sustaining the region’s future industrial capabilities. Companies like Alcan have been instrumental in supporting our mission as they realize as much as us that today’s young people are tomorrow’s business leaders," said M. Michel Perron, Project Leader for CRÉPAS.

Since 1996, CRÉPAS has been working to prevent young people from prematurely abandoning their educational studies at the secondary, cégep, and university levels.
