Montreal, Canada — Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) announced today that it has been awarded the “Excellence in Corporate Reporting” award for its 2004 Annual Report and the “Excellence in Sustainable Development Reporting” award for its 2004 Sustainability Report by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).

"Both our Annual Report and our Sustainability Report highlight Alcan’s reputation as a global business creating value for shareholders, and an enterprise with a social and environmental conscience," he added.
The theme of Alcan’s 2004 Annual Report is “AIMS to be the best” a reference to the Alcan Integrated Management System (AIMS), introduced in 2004 and combining Value Based Management, Continuous Improvement, and EHS FIRST – Alcan’s approach to environment, health, and safety. AIMS is the mechanism by which the Company pursues its governing objective of Maximizing Value and realizing its commitment to sustainability through concrete actions.
Alcan’s 2004 Sustainability Report provides updated information on the economic, environmental and social performance of the Company’s global operations and the leading role it has taken over the past year.
In the CICA Corporate Reporting Awards’ “Diversified Industries” category, Alcan’s 2004 Annual Report scored the highest average rankings in the four judging categories: financial/annual reporting, corporate governance disclosure, electronic disclosure and sustainable development reporting. Out of 105 entries, Alcan’s 2004 Sustainability Report was ranked “Canada’s best”.
The majority of eligible companies considered for the CICA Awards come from the top 50 listed on the TSX as of March 31, 2005 with a market capitalization of over $200 million. They are also incorporated in Canada.
