Lynemouth, United Kingdom Alcan Smelting & Power UK announced today that together with Scottish Power, the Company has donated a new £4,000 ventilation system to Lynemouth Resource Centre to improve the Centre’s health and safety standards.
"One of Alcan’s priorities is the health and safety of its employees and the communities in which it operates, which is why we are delighted to help such a good local cause. The centre provides an important service to the local community, helping residents develop new skills as well as enhancing what they already know," said Wyn Jones, Managing Director, Alcan Smelting & Power UK.
Ventilation in the 81-year-old building, formerly a pub, consisted of a wall fan which was in need of refurbishment. Since opening in 2000, the centre would often fill with smoke entering from the kitchen.
"We are very grateful to Alcan and Scottish Power for their kind donation. The atmosphere is now 100 percent better and the centre is a much more pleasant place to visit and work in," said Vikki Thompson, Business Manager, Lynemouth Resource Centre. "The ventilation system is attracting more and more visitors, who were previously put-off by the stuffy air and the smell of café fry-ups," she added.
The Lynemouth Resource Centre is a non-profit organization to help provide social, economic and environmental regeneration to the local community. It provides important opportunities to local residents through a range of activities, including Hatha yoga, tai chi, martial arts, vocational services and an ITC suite that provides local people with free internet access.
Miss Thompson says the centre, which is totally reliant upon handouts, just manages to cover running costs and would have been unable to raise the funds for the ventilation system independently.
"The Lynemouth Resource Centre is a vital local resource and deserves our support," said David Arnold, Project Director at Scottish Power Renewables. "Should our plans for this area crystallize, we intend to play our full part within the community. This is hopefully just the first of many opportunities for us to do so."
Two years ago, Alcan donated £5,000 to the centre for their community café, which provides a meals-on-wheels service to local pensioners. In the past 12 months, Alcan has donated money to over 30 local community groups and charities across Northumberland.
