Alma, Quebec Alcan Inc. today officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art smelter and casting complex at Alma, Quebec.
"The Alma Smelter further enhances Alcan's position in primary metal and represents a significant step forward in terms of our value agenda," said President and CEO Travis Engen. "Moreover, it significantly strengthens our home base position here in Québec."
Construction of the smelter got under way in March 1998 and the first kilograms of metal were produced in October 2000. The smelter now has an annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes of high-quality aluminum at production costs that rank among the most competitive in the global industry.
Also participating in the ceremony were Bernard Landry, premier of Quebec, the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, President of the Treasury Board of Canada as well as several members of Alcan's Executive Committee.
