Alcan Licenses FLEXCASTER Continuous Casting Technology to Nippon Light Metal Co.
2003/03/13

Cleveland, Ohio (United States) Alcan (NYSE, TSX: AL) and Nippon Light Metal Co. (NLM) have signed an agreement granting a license for the use of the FLEXCASTERTM technology in Japan to Nikkei Techno Cast Company Limited (an NLM subsidiary). The agreement permits Nikkei Techno Cast Company to use Alcan's second generation FLEXCASTER belt casting technology and equipment that can produce a wide range of high quality rolled aluminum products.

"This is the first license that has been granted for Alcan's FLEXCASTER. Expanding our proven FLEXCASTER technology into key Asian markets is an exciting opportunity for Alcan and NLM,” stated Martha Brooks, President, Alcan Rolled Products Americas and Asia. "This efficient technology for making high quality aluminum sheet gives NLM added capabilities to meet its customers' needs and exacting standards."

The Alcan FLEXCASTER technology is a leading edge, high volume, continuous casting technology with a wide range of product capabilities. The process transforms liquid aluminum into high quality coils of thin sheet in a single operation. Offering significant competitive advantages, the technology is adaptable for producing a wide range of continuous cast metal from pure aluminum to aluminum alloys with high magnesium content. Customers can benefit from shorter lead times for their orders and a wider range of product customization.

"This licensing agreement with Alcan is the culmination of extensive joint development programs between Alcan and NLM to develop high end FLEXCASTTM products for the Japanese market,” remarked Shigesato Sato, CEO of NLM. "We are optimistic about the new business opportunities that we will be able to develop by using the FLEXCASTER technology and marketing of the FLEXCAST brand of products. In addition, the extensive experience and depth of technical service and support offered through this licensing agreement, gives NLM a competitive advantage in these new markets.”

Alcan is a multinational, market-driven company and a global leader in aluminum and specialty packaging with 2002 revenues of US$12.5 billion.
