Economic Contributions

Priority is given to projects that:

  • make a positive economic contribution to our host communities or specific stakeholders of applying organization
  • educate the community about the fundamentals of economic sustainability
  • contribute to economic self-sufficiency among target stakeholders
  • incorporate Alcan products or product attributes (e.g. recycling)
  • offer opportunities to engage Alcan customers
  • include opportunities to involve Alcan employees as participants or volunteers

Social Contributions

Priority is given to projects that:
  • contribute to a higher quality of life in our host communities or among specific stakeholders of applying organization
  • support the health and well-being of Alcan's host communities
  • improve young people's social and educational environments
  • emphasize volunteerism and include opportunities for participation by Alcan employees and their families
  • sustain or foster partnerships between Alcan and institutions involved in research related to industrial health and safety, technology applicable to Alcan businesses, and professional and technical training
  • promote Alcan values of integrity, accountability, trust and transparency, and team work

Environmental Contribution

Priority is given to projects that:
  • promote recycling
  • promote the conservation of natural resources
  • enhance knowledge among young people of the interdependence of sound environmental practices and sound business practices
  • sustain or foster relationships between Alcan and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • sustain or foster relationships between Alcan and institutions involved in environmental science and research
  • include opportunities to involve Alcan employees and their families

Integrated Contribution

Highest priority is given to projects that:
  • integrate the three pillars of sustainability, i.e. products that make a positive contribution to the economic, social, and environmental well-being of communities or specific stakeholders
  • educate young people about sustainability principles and practices
  • contribute to a better understanding of sustainability, among all Alcan stakeholders, as a framework of responsible decision-making
  • position Alcan as a sustainability leader
  • provide opportunities for the exchange and development of knowledge about sustainability management systems
  • include opportunities to involve Alcan employees and their families

Organization's Track Record

In analyzing requests, we also take into consideration the applying organization's reputation, the quality of management and the overall resources required to realize a project. The projects retained are those that are consistent with Alcan's sustainability platform and come closest to meeting our objectives in the areas of branding, reputation, and visibility.
