Examples of Alcan's EHS FIRST Technical Programs
GENERAL
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Alcan aims to prevent any occupational injury or illness. As such, Alcan is committed to implementing measures intended to provide appropriate equipment for the personal protection of its employees and visitors.
PLANNED INSPECTIONS
Planned inspections are essential to improve Alcan's EHS performance. They are a clear demonstration of Alcan's commitment to environmental, health and safety excellence, enabling the identification of conditions requiring corrective action or opportunities for improvement.
HOUSEKEEPING
Alcan works towards the highest standard of internal and external cleanliness and workplace organization at all sites. Excellent housekeeping reduces the risk of accidents and enhances the quality of our products and services. In addition, it is a clear demonstration of the pride we take in our work.
MANAGEMENT OF CHANGE
Alcan is committed to implementing measures intended to identify, eliminate or control potential EHS impacts from various types of change (e.g. temporary or permanent modifications to buildings, structures, equipment, operations, etc.; significant organizational change; the initiation of additional projects). Proactively addressing any EHS FIRST issues related to such change helps to ensure a safe and efficient operating environment.
CONTRACTOR EHS MANAGEMENT
Effective communication and coordination are key components of proactive EHS management with contractors. We work with contractors to ensure that their activities on our behalf meet EHS FIRST expectations.
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE MANAGEMENT
Hazardous substances are a component of Alcan’s many diversified production processes. It is essential that Alcan employees and contractors have the knowledge and access to mechanisms and equipment that allow for the safe management of these substances. This applies to all stages of use, from transportation to storage, use and disposal.
VISITOR EHS MANAGEMENT
Alcan sites routinely receive many visitors (any individual entering an Alcan site who is not an employee of that site or a contractor employee working on that site) who may not be familiar with the EHS aspects and hazards of the site. As Alcan is committed to implementing measures intended to protect the environment, and the health and safety of all visitors, site EHS orientations are provided and site rules enforced.
GENERAL WORK PERMITS
The use of general work permits to identify, address and help control EHS hazards and risks, in both routine and non-routine work, is a key element of Alcan’s approach to protecting the environment and ensuring workforce health and safety.
ENVIRONMENT
GREENHOUSE GAS MANAGEMENT
The management and reporting of greenhouse gases (GHG) is of great importance for both international and regional policies and agreements as well as in the context of emissions trading. As such, Alcan is committed to implementing measures intended to understand its GHG emissions and achieve the company's annual emission reduction objective (please see our TARGET program).
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
A systematic approach to the management of resources (e.g. energy, water, raw materials) works to minimize potential adverse environmental impacts. As such, Alcan is committed to implementing a resource management program that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard, including identification and prioritization of processes that will continually improve our performance. (Please see our paper Committed to the Sustainable Management of Water.)
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT
The protection of soil and groundwater from potentially adverse effects of our operations represents an ongoing activity at our sites. Where recognized effects have occurred, Alcan is committed to taking appropriate action to address these issues.
ENVIRONMENTAL RELEASES MANAGEMENT
A systemic approach to the management of environmental releases to the air and water works to minimize potential adverse effects. Alcan is committed to implementing an environmental releases management program that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard, including continual efforts to evaluate and improve our performance.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Alcan is committed to implementing a waste management program at our site that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard. This includes a thorough understanding of our own waste generation, and our storage, treatment and disposal strategies. Examples of how we seek to minimize our waste generation include changes in material inputs, improvements to process and product design, and waste diversion activities such as recycling.
SPILL CONTAINMENT AND COUNTERMEASURES
Environmentally acceptable storage and handling of hazardous substance (including petroleum products) is of the utmost importance to Alcan. We are committed to using appropriately designed transfer and storage facilities and to ensuring that procedures are in place in order to minimize the risk of releases at all stages of the material's use on site.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
HEALTH MANAGEMENT
Ensuring the ongoing health of employees, neighbouring communities and customers is of the utmost importance to Alcan. We are committed to providing the proper monitoring, risk assessments and action plans to achieve this goal.
HEARING CONSERVATION
We are committed to implementing measures designed to protect the hearing of all employees and to ensure that our sites establish a proactive hearing conservation program.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Alcan is committed to safeguarding the health of all employees. As such, we implement measures designed to protect the respiratory health of our employees through the identification, elimination and control of potential risk exposures.
SAFETY
HAZARDOUS ENERGY CONTROL
The unexpected energizing of equipment or sudden release of stored energy is a risk in our operations. As such, we are committed to identifying all hazards, assessing the risk, and then controlling the risk where it cannot be eliminated.
CONFINED SPACE ENTRY
Confined spaces such as tanks, pits and silos can present dangerous working environments. We ensure that our sites have programs in place to identify these hazards as well as mechanisms to address them. For example, sites may use a permit-based system that applies to anyone entering or performing work in confined spaces.
LIFTING EQUIPMENT
The safe management of lifting equipment and devices is a core component of site safety. This includes the implementation of site-wide safe-operating practices and the use of preventative tools, and many other specific actions. The implementation of this policy ensures the ongoing safety of our employees, contractors and visitors.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT SAFETY
The safe management of mobile equipment, site traffic and potential pedestrian interaction is essential at all sites. We are committed to ensuring the highest degree of safety at all sites using mobile equipment. We implement measures such as traffic pattern management, separation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and the rationalization of mobile equipment needs.
MACHINE SAFEGUARDING
The moving parts of machines or equipment can present significant hazards. At Alcan, we are committed to implementing measures designed to safeguard machines to control or eliminate interfaces with operators and others in the vicinity.
MOLTEN METAL EXPLOSION PREVENTION
Contact between molten metal aluminum and water, moisture or reactive chemicals can result in metal explosion. Alcan is committed to implementing measures intended to protect its employees and operations from such incidents through the identification of potential hazards, assessments of the risk, and the management of this risk.
FALL PROTECTION/WORKING AT HEIGHT
Working at height presents significant hazards to our employees. As such, we are committed to using the proper fall protection systems and devices wherever there is a potential for falls.
HOT WORK
Hot work (e.g. welding, grinding, soldering, brazing and cutting) can result in significant hazards for our employees. At Alcan, we are committed to implementing measures intended to ensure employee awareness of the hazards associated with this work, as well as effective controls to manage these risks.
SECURITY, FIRE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE
To optimize the management of emergencies, Alcan is committed to producing site-specific emergency response plans and to evaluating each site’s emergency preparedness.
CRISIS MANAGEMENT
A crisis is a very serious and unusual event which could be beyond a given site’s ability or capacity to manage. In such cases, the Alcan Crisis Management System applies. This program ensures that practices are in place so that Alcan reacts appropriately and effectively.
FIRE LOSS PREVENTION
The potential for fires is an ever-present risk. Working with industry and technical experts, Alcan sites are continually striving to reduce the risk of fires through the development and implementation of site-specific fire risk improvement plans.
