ADVANCED ALUMINUM-LITHIUM PRODUCTS, INNOVATIVE ASSEMBLY TECHNOLOGIES
AND PROVEN RECYCLING TECHNIQUES CONFIRM ALCAN AS AN INDUSTRY LEADER
PARIS, France, June 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Alcan Aerospace today highlighted
the group's commitment to innovation in three main areas: aluminum-lithium,
assembly technologies and recycling in order to provide its aerospace
customers with leading-edge solutions.

Alcan is pursuing the development of a new range of products from
aluminum-lithium alloys that have been developed primarily to reduce the
weight of aerospace structures. Alcan has already created six aluminum-lithium
alloys, out of which four are flying on aircraft today.
Another area where Alcan has demonstrated its commitment to innovation is
in the development of expertise in unique assembly technologies, specifically
in Friction Stir Welding (FSW). FSW is a solid-state joining technique which
helps conserve the metal's mechanical properties as the metal is not melted
during the joining and assembly process. Alcan's research center in Voreppe,
France is currently developing this technology for its customers and their new
aircraft programs.
In keeping with Alcan's commitment to sustainability, the Company has
pioneered the recycling of aircraft parts. Following a thorough assessment of
its customers needs, Alcan's Issoire plant in France developed a process for
recycling large volumes of aluminum along the whole fabrication chain
including aircraft parts. This process has been successfully implemented and
has created 12 additional jobs at Issoire.
