VANDERHOOF, BC, June 1 /CNW Telbec/ - Alcan announced today that it will
donate $120,000 to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. to support its
work in ensuring the future of the endangered Nechako River white sturgeon
through the creation of a pilot hatchery.
"Alcan is proud to help continue and further the work of the Freshwater
Fisheries Society of B.C., an organization that has brought together
government, industry, First Nations, science and communities to work toward
building a self-sustaining sturgeon population," said Jean Simon, President,
Alcan Primary Metal Group, North America.
The pilot hatchery program was identified as essential to the
conservation of the Nechako white sturgeon, a population been listed as
endangered under the federal Species At Risk Act. The program enjoyed
particular success this year, with over 150,000 fertilized white sturgeon eggs
being put into the hatchery for eventual release into the Nechako River.
"Alcan is particularly pleased to support the conservation of white
sturgeon in the Nechako River, a valued component of our local ecosystem,"
added Paul Henning, Alcan's Managing Director, B.C. Operations.
This latest contribution from Alcan is in addition to the Company's
$100,000 donation for sturgeon research and monitoring. These funds are being
used to assess the naturally spawning population, monitor the abundance of
juvenile sturgeon in the Nechako River and study the geomorphology of the
Nechako River. These projects are carried out in collaboration with the
Nechako White Sturgeon Technical Working Group, Carrier Sekani Tribal Council,
and federal and provincial governments.
