ALCAN SHARES THE FIRST EVER "PRIX QUEBECOIS DE L'ENTREPRISE
CITOYENNE" EX AEQUO AWARD WITH THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

COMPANY RECOGNIZED FOR ITS NEW SPENT POTLINING RECYCLING PLANT
                           IN THE SAGUENAY REGION
    >>

MONTREAL, Oct. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - Alcan Inc. has been recognized as a
co-recipient of the first ever Prix Québécois de l'Entreprise Citoyenne by
Korn/Ferry International and L'Actualité magazine for its innovative aluminum
spent potlining recycling plant in the Saguenay region. The Prix Québécois de
l'Entreprise Citoyenne was established to recognize the outstanding corporate
citizenship efforts of Quebec-based companies. Alcan will share this year's
award with the Cirque du Soleil.
"We are very proud to be a co-recipient of this prestigious award. More
importantly, we are pleased that through innovation developed in Quebec, this
new facility will provide an environmentally sustainable solution to recycle
and re-use traditional waste materials that will set the technological
standard for the entire aluminum industry," said Jean Simon, President of
Alcan Primary Metal Group, North America. "Alcan is firmly committed to the
environmental well-being of our employees and our communities," he continued.
Spent potlining is the residual material generated during the de-lining
of pots following the aluminum smelting process. The spent potlining is
composed of carbon and various elements and is traditionally pre-treated and
land-filled under strict precautions. Through this new process, all of the
spent potlining will be recycled, providing the global aluminum industry with
a sustainable re-useable solution for this industrial material.
Alcan's spent potlining treatment plant is a unique industrial-scale
facility plant that will have a capacity to recycle approximately 80kt of
material per year. The plant is expected to be fully operational during the
second quarter of 2008 and will employ around 50 people.

Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) is a leading global materials company,
delivering high quality products and services worldwide. With world-class
