Alcan's Key Sustainability Focus Areas
Following extensive work throughout 2003 and 2004, Alcan's Sustainability Steering Team participated in a number of major direction setting sessions to discuss Alcan's sustainability direction, explore key issues and identify opportunities to integrate sustainability into the Company’s business systems. As a result of this work, which included extensive consultations both inside and outside the company, a set of priority sustainability focus areas of key importance to Alcan were identified.
These eight sustainability focus areas are:
By recognizing these eight areas as key factors in addressing sustainability within Alcan, the geographic or business group boundaries have been removed. These company boundaries can sometimes hinder the development of a cohesive and forward-looking global strategy to address an issue company-wide, confront the challenges and identify new opportunities. Although this list will likely evolve over time, it provides a useful framework for considering Alcan's key challenges and opportunities.
Energy
Energy is a vital industrial input for Alcan's operations, especially in its Bauxite and Alumina and Primary Metal groups. The energy mix, its relative availability and cost affect Alcan's competitiveness, stakeholder interests, and a range of environmental issues related to sustainable energy management.
Climate Change
Climate change is a complex global issue that has significant implications for governments, industry and society alike. For Alcan, addressing the economic, social and environmental dimensions of climate change is directly related to the Company's global competitiveness and preservation of its long-term licence to operate.
Natural Resource Stewardship
Given the energy, capital and material-intensive nature of Alcan's operations, natural resource stewardship at Alcan is a fundamental practice that offers savings both for the environment and the bottom line.
Community Development
The challenge for Alcan as a community partner is to contribute to regional development in the most effective manner based on vastly differing community needs, while maintaining and enhancing the Company's sustainable global competitiveness.
Well-Being
Due to the manufacturing nature of many of Alcan's operations and processes, and the use of toxic or potentially dangerous materials, long-term sustainability requires a consistent and effective strategy to ensure the well-being of employees, contractors, suppliers, customers and communities at all installations, regardless of location.
Environmental Releases
As part of Alcan’s environmental, health and safety management system, environmental releases present a number of challenges due to the wide variety of air, land and water issues related to the diverse operations of the Company’s four business groups.
Innovation and Industry Shifts
Part of Alcan's challenge as a sustainable business is to respond effectively and in a timely manner to a range of industry shifts at a variety of levels.
Product Stewardship
Product Stewardship is a product-centered approach to sustainability – a management concept that Alcan employs to consider the complete supply chain and downstream activities related to the life cycle of its products.
