A World First: The AP50 Pilot Plant
The first phase of a $2.1-billion investment in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.

On December 14th, 2006, Alcan announced a ten-year, CAN$2.1-billion investment program in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The initial phase of the investment program involves the construction of the only AP50 Pilot Plant in the world, which will take place on the site of the old Arvida Plant Söderberg potrooms of the Jonquière Complex, in Saguenay City. The pilot plant, with its 44 electrolysis pots and certain related services, will allow for the continued development of the AP50 technology, exclusive to Alcan.

Construction of the AP50 Pilot Plant is slated to begin during the first quarter of 2008, and operation is expected to start in 2010. The new AP50 facilities will have a yearly production capacity of 60,000 tonnes of primary aluminum, using hydropower for energy supply. This will make the province of Quebec the world centre of preindustrial-scale development for the AP50 electrolysis technology.

The AP50 Pilot Plant will use modern technology issued from new-generation smelters with substantially improved environmental and energy performance, which will greatly reduce its ecological impact. Moreover, Alcan is committed to taking every precaution needed to minimize the disturbances caused by the construction and operation of the AP50 Pilot Plant on its close surroundings and neighbouring community.

The AP50 Pilot Plant project has been made possible thanks to support from the Quebec Government, Federal tax credits for Scientific Research and Experimental Development, union partnerships, employees’ work and efforts, and backing from regional stakeholders and the community. The new AP50 Pilot Plant is the cornerstone of an industrial strategy aiming at the long-term presence of Alcan facilities in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
