Advanced Search Help

( ) (Parenthesis)
This determines the order in which the Search processes sections of your query. A part of the query enclosed in parentheses will be processed before parts outside the parentheses. Example: '(bauxite OR alumina) AND plant' -> (bauxite OR alumina) will be treated before 'AND plant'.

AND
These find documents containing all the conditions or words linked by AND. Example: 'bauxite AND alumina AND plant' finds documents containing all three of these words.

OR
These find documents containing either of the conditions or words and returns them ranked by number of appearances in the document. Example: 'alumina OR bauxite OR plant' finds documents containing at least one of these words.

NOT
These make the query negative.

  • You can put NOT between words: 'alumina AND NOT bauxite' finds documents containing the word alumina, but not if they also contain the word bauxite.
  • '(alumina OR bauxite) AND NOT (chemicals OR packaging)' finds documents containing the word alumina or bauxite, but not if they also contain the word chemicals or packaging.
  • '(alumina AND bauxite) AND NOT plant' finds documents containing the words alumina and bauxite, but not if they also contain the word plant.
"" (Double quotes)
Placing double quotes around operators (like AND, OR, NOT etc.) allows the Search to read them as normal words. Example: "health and safety" finds documents containing the phrase health and safety.

?
This is a wildcard. It represents any single letter. Example: '?one' finds documents containing bone, cone, done, gone (and any other four-letter words that end with 'one'). '???ck' finds documents containing stack, clock, stick, truck; rack, rock.

*
This is a wildcard. It represents any extension of letters. Example: 'plan*' finds documents containing plan, plans, plants, planification (and any other words of any length that starts with 'plan'). It also works conversely, as in '*bility', which will return documents containing sustainability, stability, etc. Also, '*lum*' finds documents containing alumina, aluminum, luminosity, column, etc.

Tip: You may combine any or all of the boolean or wildcards in one search to refine your search. Example: '("Health and Safet?" OR Sustain*) AND program?) OR NOT 2004'.
