Aiming to be the best is second nature at Alcan, whether it is in the way we produce our high-quality products or the way we manage our businesses and engage with stakeholders. The introduction of the Alcan Integrated Management System (AIMS) in 2004 served to interconnect our three key corporate building blocks: Value-Based Management, EHS FIRSTand Continuous Improvement. By aligning these elements into an integrated business management system, we have aligned our efforts in pursuit of a common goal -- our governing objective of Maximizing Value.

EHS FIRST EHS FIRST is a set of common standards, procedures and, most importantly, a mindset for achieving excellence in Alcan's environment, health and safety performance for the benefit of its employees and the communities in which it operates. EHS FIRST represents an ironclad commitment from each Alcan employee and from all levels of the organization to improve through increased awareness, knowledge sharing and by applying best practices.
EHS FIRST is more than a management system -- it also promotes a proactive attitude and an acceptance of responsibility and accountability. It demands a willingness to change, and a promise to do the right thing. EHS FIRST incorporates ISO 14001, a globally recognized environmental standard, and OHSAS 18001, an international occupational health and safety certification. It also ensures that we comply with and, where possible, exceed increasingly strict government regulations around the world regarding transparency, responsibility and accountability.

At Alcan, our EHS FIRST vision lies at the heart of the guidance we provide to our employees in environment, health and safety. To implement this vision, we focus on fostering leadership and motivating our employees to become champions of EHS excellence. Conceptually, we communicate this through our EHS FIRST model and reinforce it through targeted training and learning initiatives.
